Overview

Horace K. Mann's The Lives of the Popes in the Early Middle Ages (19 vols.) aims at giving a full, authoritative, and systematic account of the life of each succeeding pope from the 7th–13th centuries. Drawing from numerous sources, Mann provides the main political and historical context for each pope before delving into their lives and work. Mann's biographies provide the background for many important moments in the history of the Catholic Church, giving insight into how important church doctrines and disciplines evolved during this era. Each volume includes a list of Mann's sources for each biography, illustrations, maps, notes on important councils and synods, letters in their original languages with their English translations, and more.
