Overview

Leading Catholic biblical scholar Henry Wansbrough provides a pithy and readable commentary covering all the Sunday readings for years A, B, and C. Wansbrough provides incisive commentary informed by his many years of teaching Scripture as a scholar and Benedictine monk of Ampleforth Abbey, and member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission. For each Sunday a short commentary on the three readings is given, together with questions and suggestions for personal reflection, and a section for families looking at the readings together. A section covering major feasts, especially those which at times take the place of the Sunday, is presented at the back of the book.

If the Word of God is ‘alive and active’ (Heb. 4:12) it must be alive and active for all of us today. In these commentaries the background and shape of every passage is opened up and shared with us. This is a great achievement by Henry Wansbrough and we should all be grateful to him.

—Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, Archbishop emeritus, Westminster, UK

Beautifully written and drawing upon a lifetime of biblical scholarship, Dom Henry Wansbrough’s explanations of the Bible readings Sunday by Sunday are as informative as they are a delight! Arising from notes originally for children in Catholic schools, these fuller versions will benefit readers of all ages and across all denominations, particularly through the very relevant questions appended to every reading.

Richard A. Burridge, professor, King’s College, London, UK

This is among my lectionary commentaries that I have saved in the right-side panel, with the lectionary on the left, for my daily lectionary reading (saved as a layout). The reflections are good and the questions posed are thought-provoking.
