Digital Logos Edition
Following up on the success of Feasting on the Word, Feasting on the Gospels provides another unique preaching resource—this time with a focus on the most preached upon portions of the New Testament: the Gospels. This first part of the series presents a two-volume commentary on Matthew. With contributions from a diverse and respected group of scholars and pastors, these first volumes in the Feasting on the Gospels series includes completely new material covering every single passage of Matthew, making it suitable for a variety of uses. These volumes incorporate four preaching perspectives to choose from for each passage: theological, pastoral, exegetical, and homiletical. Whether you preach every week or only occasionally, Feasting on the Gospels is a uniquely valuable resource.
In the Logos edition, these valuable volumes are enhanced by amazing functionality. “Jesus is faced with two choices: he can agree to the tax, casting his lot with the Herodians, in which case he is a traitor to the nationalistic movement; or he can rebuke the tax, in which case he is an insubordinate rebel against the state. Both put Jesus in serious jeopardy; either he betrays his people, or he declares war on Rome.” (Volume 2, Page 190)
“The parable wants us to enter this tension and sit for a while with the recognition that with God the contradictions so apparent to us are not at work. We are encountering here a different calculus, one in which being entirely fair (think God’s covenant faithfulness) and lavishly generous (think God’s mercy to the Gentiles) flow together in an unbroken whole (cf. Rom. 15:1–13). It is like God to act in this way. God refuses to play fairness and generosity off against each other.” (Volume 2, Page 126)
“The empty tomb stands as witness that there is something beyond even death and taxes that is certain in this world: God’s absolution given in response to ambiguity, God’s mercy and grace offered to those in need, and God’s new life granted to all who are dying.” (Volume 2, Page 193)
“This is no personal event in the lives of the disciples. It is a mystery that testifies to the inbreaking of God’s reign in the world.” (Volume 2, Page 358)
“If we wait and watch long enough, we come to see that the only way we come to know the goodness of God” (Volume 2, Page 127)
