Digital Logos Edition
Where is that in the Bible? Fundamentalists and many other Protestants use this question all the time, particularly when they’re dealing with Catholics. When they are being trained how to talk with Catholics, Fundamentalist evangelizers are taught to use this question. They see it as the master key to defeating Catholics. Too often, it’s just that. Countless Catholics are absolutely stumped by the question and don’t know what to say in response. This is a very important principle in Protestant thought. It’s the idea that we should do our theology by Scripture alone. It even has a fancy Latin name Sola Scriptura. It’s time for Catholics to stop being beaten up with the Fundamentalists’ favorite question. That’s why Catholic Answers has published the book 100 Biblical Arguments against Sola Scriptura by well-known apologist Dave Armstrong. This powerful new book contains just that: biblical arguments.

“If the Protestant says we are not bound to anything not found explicitly in Scripture, we might ask him where in Scripture we find such a notion, and why we should think ourselves in a better (or different) place than the earliest Christians, before the New Testament was compiled. Paul and the other apostles show no indication that pre-New Testament Christians were somehow in a less-prepared position regarding Christianity and Christian authority than we ‘Bible Christians’ today are. If anything, the opposite is the case.” (Page 41)
“Thus, one of my favorite counter-arguments is to point out that the Apostle Paul and his companions Silas and Timothy made their way ‘through the cities’ and ‘delivered to them for observance the decisions which had been reached by the apostles and elders who were at Jerusalem’ (Acts 16:4). This council at Jerusalem was described in the previous chapter as having reached its decisions by the direct aid or guidance of the Holy Spirit (15:28).” (Pages 19–20)
“But what are the ‘essential’ teachings? Who has the authority to determine that? According to sola scriptura, the answer must be found in Scripture itself. Where in the Bible is a list of such teachings? It doesn’t exist.” (Page 66)
“What is apostolic will always be harmonious with biblical teachings, since the truths Jesus taught the apostles and the truths recorded in Scripture proceed from the same body of God’s revelation.” (Page 28)
“Titus 1:5, however, the bishop is higher than an elder because he is charged to ‘appoint’ them ‘in every town.’ This suggests both hierarchy and regional administration or jurisdiction.” (Page 86)
