Overview

What are the spiritual gifts? Do all Christians have them? Have the miraculous gifts ceased?

The topic of spiritual gifts is often a point of contention among Christians. In Spiritual Gifts: What They Are and Why They Matter, Dr. Thomas R. Schreiner, a leading New Testament scholar, answers these questions.

Schreiner shares his personal experience related to spiritual gifts, but more importantly, he unpacks what the Bible has to say about them. In doing so, he brings a spirit of humility and charity, reminding us that though spiritual gifts are important, we can have unity in Christ even where we disagree.

Top Highlights

“I believe God gave gifts and miracles, signs and wonders, in remarkable ways at certain points in redemptive history to authenticate his revelation.” (source)

“Fifth, our gifts are not to be ascribed to our own spirituality but to the sovereignty of the Spirit.” (source)

“The difference between cessationists47 and continuationists48 is in some ways insignificant at the practical level when it comes to prophecy, for what continuationists call prophecy, cessationists call impressions. As a cessationist, I affirm that God may speak to his people through impressions. And there are occasions where impressions are startlingly accurate.” (source)

“I suggest that though 1 Corinthians 13:8–12 tells us the gifts will end when Christ returns, it doesn’t require that all the gifts last until Jesus returns.” (source)

“I incline to the view that both ‘message of wisdom’ and ‘message of knowledge’ refer to the gift of teaching.” (source)
