Word study is a widely-used technique for in-depth Bible study. The idea is to understand the text better by breaking it down into individual words and studying the meaning, significance, and usage of each word.

Word Study Guide helps automate the task of word study by handling all the tedious parts, leaving you with the enjoyable parts. It's a great example of how Logos Bible Software saves you tons of time while taking your study to the next level! Here's how it works...

Click the "Word Study Guide" link and the software reads John 15:4 and looks up information about each word in a number of the language dictionaries in your library. It then presents you with a concise report of all the research needed to study each word in depth.

One click generates everything you see below...Logos Bible Software does all the heavy lifting for you!

Word Study Guide does all the work of gathering together
everything you need for in-depth word study

Notice that the left-hand column of the report lists the English words from the passage, the center column shows the Greek words underlying the English (along with Strong's numbers and transliterations), while the third column lists the reference books in your library that explain the underlying Greek words. Everything you need for word study is right here!

For example, let’s look at the word abide. Word Study Guide shows us that the word abide comes from the Greek word meno and lists the reference works that will help us study this word.

A single click on any of the reference works listed (Enhanced Strong's Lexicon, for example) opens it to the entry for meno. In other words, you can open a Greek dictionary without knowing any Greek! You can read all of this information about the Greek word meno without having to know the language.

A single click opens Enhanced Strong's Lexicon in its own window

Dictionary information can also be previewed inline by clicking one of the blue triangles in the list. This is perfect for a quick comparison of various dictionaries' treatment of a word (see #1 in the screenshot below).

The Word Study Guide report even provides the tense, voice and mood of verbs in the passage (see #2 above).

Notice also the link to Englishman’s Concordance (#3 above). The Englishman’s Concordance is a very powerful report itself. It looks through the Bible, finds our word meno, and shows us every occurrence of the Greek word meno throughout the Bible, showing how it’s translated into English each time.

Englishman's Concordance provides a comprehensive
report of a word's usage in Scripture

So not only can you look through hundreds of books in your electronic library automatically...but simply by entering the passage and clicking "Go!" you can also study Greek and Hebrew this same simple way.

For those who have a greater knowledge of biblical languages, a tool called Exegetical Guide provides similar functionality but is based on lexemes and morphology rather than Strong's numbers. We'll look at Exegetical Guide next...
